Bone and Soft Tissue Pathology

Research

The group of Prof Daniel Baumhoer investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of bone and soft tissue tumours. These tumours commonly manifest in children and adolescents and encompass over 200 distinguishable subtypes, some of which are exceptionally rare. This requires modern techniques and highly specialised pathologists for diagnosis, often leading to extensive waiting times for patients. Prof Daniel Baumhoer and his group aspire to improve this process with a recently developed sequencing technique that uncovers methylation patterns of specific DNA regions within genes involved in tumor development. With the implementation of this technique, they will not only reduce the waiting time for patients’ diagnoses but also discover more personalised therapy options.

Prof Dr Daniel Baumhoer

Prof Dr Daniel Baumhoer investigates the molecular the pathogenesis of soft tissue and bone tumours, with a particular focus on methylation classifiers. He is also a consultant pathologist with special expertise in bone and soft tissue, as well as head and neck pathology. At the University Hospital in Basel, he leads the Bone Tumour Reference Centre and the DÖSAK Reference Registry through which he receives 800-1000 consultation cases a year, mostly from Switzerland and Germany but also from other countries. Prof Baumhoer contributed to several fascicles of the WHO classification of tumours as the responsible first author and contributed to more than 200 peer-reviewed publications. His research focuses on elucidating the molecular pathogenesis of bone and soft tissue tumours, with a particular focus on methylation classifiers.
